Doing the Math for probability of genetic outcome.

The Booroola Gene is a single major identifiable prolificacy gene.  One copy (B+) will increase a ewe's lambing rate by 1 lamb per lambing.  2 copies (BB) will increase the lambing rate by 2 lambs per lambing.  They call the single copy (B+) heterozygous and double copy (BB) homozygous.

If you are using a BB ram on a non-booroola ewe (++), all her lambs will be B+.  But BB is difficult to breed for without inbreeding, so they are very, very rare.

If you are using a B+ ram and you breed him to non-booroola (++) ewes, half of the lambs will be B+.  The other half will be non-booroola, or ++.  You would have to DNA or projeny test the ewes to identify the B+ ewes as they have no outwardly obvious traits.

If you breed a B+ Ram to a B+ ewe;
50% of the lambs will be B+;
25% will be ++;
25% will be BB.

If you breed a BB to a BB, all the lambs will be BB.

If you breed a BB to a B+, 50% will be BB, 50% will be B+.

Basically you use a Pearson Square to calculate it simply and easily.

(BB) x (++) = 100% (B+)

(B+) x (++) = 50% (B+), 50% (++)

(B+) x (B+) = 50% (B+), 25% (BB), 25% (++)

(BB) x (B+) = 50% (BB), 50% (B+)

(BB) x (BB) = 100% (BB)
